Ok rabbit guys, anyone got any alternative ideas for nest boxes for my New Zealand does? I see at TSC they sell metal ones for $20, I just can’t see spending that kin d of money on them, but if I have to I will…
Anyone have any other suggestions? Also, what are good dimensions for one for a New Zealand size rabbit?
OBSESSED: A word the lazy use to describe the dedicated.
Dad and I used to make a box of plywood and add soft straw. Key was soft or the straw would puncture the kits. The does tended to pull fur and add to the nest. if I recall they were about 8 high and 16 long with a width of like 10 inches or so. Had a half cover on top with sides that sloped to the front. Just used scrap material and the rabbits never seemed to mind. Sort of like a man made rabbit hole.
I made mine 16 inches long, 10inches wide, 8 inches high except the front I made 6 inches high this way if a kit was still attached she would knock it off as she went out of the box. I also put hardware cloth on the bottom so if she peed in the box it would leak out. I used straw as well and then she would fill it with her own hair. Key is not to put it in too early or she will use it as a bathroom.
