I haven't made any yet, but form what I've read, use pickles 4 inches an smaller, can the pickles the day you pick them, clip the ends off, an give them an ice bath for about an hour before you pickle them.
I soak my cucumbers overnight in a cooler full of ice water and salt. I think the salt helps draw out some of the water and helps them stay crunchy. This year I'm going to try alum too. Always say I will but never do.

I was just reading yesterday that the Alum isn't that healthy for you. I will stay away from that . I have always picked them and done the ice water bath overnight. Put some calcium chloride in each jar and put the hot brine on the cold pickles. Process in a boiling water bath. Never had a problem with them being soft. I actually picked some this afternoon, maybe I'll try to take some pictures as I go through my process.
