Recently in less than a week I experienced loss of power(for about 2 hrs.) and 4 days later loss of water supply (for about 3.5 hrs.) I am not independent of the electrical grid or the rural water co-op, but I do have contingency plans in place if either of these fail. Any time there is some sort of an outage it allows me to test my plans and it helps to reveal where I can stand a little improvement. Water is life and I do have a water storage. Any way I can conserve it the longer I can preserve life. Battery power is always a good storage item. Being able to stay in touch with the outside world helps to maintain morale as well as informing you on any needed adjustments you might be needing to make within your contingency plans.
We recently purchased adult washcloths(wet wipes), more batteries, and a two pack emergency AM/FM/NOAA radio with weather alert, flashlight, cell phone charger that are solar, crank, or AA DC powered. If you get the Outdoor Channel you may be familiar with Micheal Bane "The Best Defense/ Survival" if not here is the link,
