Anyone use solar for electricity? If so, hows it working for you? any issues with maintenance, snow accumulation, not getting what you thought you would out of it?
Just had my house evaluated. I have nice south facing roof they tell me i could fit 21 panels on. I'm all about long term investments and the numbers I'm seeing are looking very good. Also, after incentives and rebates the system cost is reduced by more than 50%.
If you are frugal, you can get a LOT out of a small system. If you have lights on everywhere you're not and running microwaves and leaving appliances and stuff eating up tons of standby power, then you'll be like my neighbors. They have 39000.00 worth of solar panels and still have an electric bill. I have no idea what they're running over there.
I'm on national Grid and my household house burns under 8 dollars worth of electricity in a month. The bastards add on about 35 bucks worth of taxes and fees but the consumption is under 8 bucks. damn thieves.

Wow JC those are some crazy fees they tack on! We use CL&P and use about 45 dollars worth of energy in the winter months. At that rate we get wacked with approximately 6 dollars worth of fees. In the summer months that bill can double. the solar panels will generate about 89 dollars/month plus or minus 10%. if I drop a few more trees we might get a little extra which will more than cover us through the summer months. And the trees will go straight into the wood stove.
its a big investment (12K) but in the long run the numbers are in my favor.

I hope it works to plan for ya bro. I have considered some solar on my Arkansas place, but that is a ways down the road.

Off grid here with 4 panels. 185 watts each. I run my sundanzer freezer, 3 lights and 2 security lights, radio, and laptop. More than enough for me. Don't have a tv or want one. "Small place - Much peace. "

I'm considering a move back to Ohio to be closer to my Mother. I've seen several nice small Amish homesteads with out power and have been looking into the cost of solar systems. The houses are built very well and have large great rooms with nice wood burners. Its always good to hear from REAL people who are doing it.
